Wifi Vs Mobile Broadband Wars
When it comes to the Wi-Fi vs. mobile broadband wars, both sides believe that they have the service that is dominant and will eventually make the other connectivity option quietly disappear. While Wi-Fi is still more commonly available, mobile broadband continues to pick up steam as roaming charges have been reduced due to regulatory pressure and the fact that it is the safer option when it comes to privacy concerns. Whereas there are many security concerns when it comes to transmitting and receiving data through a public Wi-Fi connection.
The Wi-Fi camp continues to be strong though including a recent announcement from Nomad Digital about their agreement to provide on board passenger service on over 25 East Midlands trains, with 6 to begin momentarily. Thanks in part to Nomad Digital, Wi-Fi service is quickly becoming the standard on various modes of mass transit with more then 1,500 vehicles equipped with their on board connectivity.
If mobile broadband providers such Starhome want to make strides in this area they will need to prove their dongle service would be more reliable then the traditionally unreliable Wi-Fi service. Initial connectivity issues and repeated problems throughout long trips have often angered users of on board Wi-Fi connections. Conversely, mobile broadband is only set to get better and better, especially with the arrival of 4G in the not too distant future.
