Smartphone users, prepare to say good-bye to unlimited mobile broadband data contracts from O2

O2 mobile broadband has decided to withdraw the unlimited data contract for new Smartphone customers which will be replaced by three data bundles; beginning with 24th June, there will be set monthly download limits.

On the same day, the new Apple iPhone 4 is expected to be released, together with three specific monthly data options for Smartphone users: 500 MB, 750 MB and 1GB.

However, those interested in unlimited data should know that this offer will be still on as a promotion until 1st October. Later on, all heavy users will have to purchase bolt-ons for additional use (they will pay £5 for 500MB; £10 for 1GB). O2 will regularly alert customers to check their usage, thus helping them to keep a record of and cut their monthly data cost.

The new plans will come with a two-year contract and monthly cost from £25 and £60. It will include free wi-fi access. Texts will be unlimited while the call minutes and data will vary according to the bundle plan.

This new tariff will not apply to existing Smartphone users until they renew their contract with the provider or go for upgrading of any kind.

O2 believes that most of its Smartphone customers will not use more than 500MB data a month so they will probably not need any bolt-ons for additional use.
