Ofcom Slashes Home Broadband Termination Charges
If broadband customers worry about the charges that they might have to pay in case they want to switch providers, here is good news: it will be much easier to do that in the near future thanks to the cuts related to the landline contract termination charges that have recently been announced.
Ofcom have talked providers of broadband bundles into reducing the charges they currently apply to their customers who intend to buy out of the contract and sign with a different provider.
There have been talks between Ofcom and TalkTalk and Virgin Media for the last eighteen months. This has resulted into big reductions to the well-known 'termination charges' for landline phone contracts around the UK.
For example, the new charge one needs to pay to get out of the TalkTalk Essential broadband bundle has been reduced to £8; it used to cost no less than £20, sometimes over £30.
The Virgin Media broadband and home phone bundle termination charge has been dropped to £5-£10, according to the geographic position of the subscriber. Research by Orchid Consulting shows that over 50% of Brits switched service providers at some point in their life.
