Mobile broadband get together for Mobile TV trial

Three top UK mobile networks, Orange, Vodafone and O2 are going to join forces in view of a joint mobile TV trial.

The Integrated Mobile Broadband (IMB) 3GPP standard will be tried over three months starting October in Slough and Central London. During this trial, the network infrastructure will be shared among the three operators.

Orange said that the intention of the networks is to see whether IMB could help mobile operators meet the ever rising demand for mobile entertainment, create new service packages as well as maximise investments for the 3G networks.

What there is to demonstrate will be the IBM ability to deliver live streaming video and offloading traffic from existing 3G networks by means of broadcasting and content storing.

IPWireless in partnership with Ericsson are to provide the necessary technology for the pilot. IPWireless will also supply the core 3GPP broadcast technology. This will be used to explore the performance of the TDD spectrum for mobile broadcast services.

On the other hand, Ericsson will provide integration services, as well as a media platform. The rich media user interface for the pilot will come from Streamezzo, the software publisher of open development platforms.
