Mobile broadband bills now limited in Europe

It seems that mobile broadband charges beyond the UK border will be limited. Keeping in mind that the EU is going to cap roaming charges, the average customer will encounter less trouble due to their broadband service bills.

The first day of July has brought change in mobile broadband roaming charges. These will be automatically set at £40 (about €50).

Moreover, when a customer reaches 80% of his or her allowance, the provider will send a notification.

Similarly, if the customer does not want to use as much as that, he or she can arrange that by notifying the operator and asking for the right settings. It is estimated that the new settings will reduce the maximum wholesale charge for mobile broadband data roaming to 64p.

These measures are intended to make the telecom market in the EU more competitive, according to Neelie Kroes, EC Vice President for the Digital Agenda. Consequently, EU business travellers and tourists using broadband abroad with their laptops and smart phones will no longer get shock bills.

It has been recently announced that the EC is planning to introduce broadband access to all members of the EU by the end of 2013.
