Fibre optic broadband in most of London by 2011

BT are investing big money in fibre optic broadband. They have recently announced that they are going to increase their investment in fibre broadband from £1.5 billion to £2.5 billion. In this way it will be made available to 40% of the UK by the year 2012 and to two thirds of the UK by 2015.

The BT fibre broadband brings speeds of 40Mb - 100Mb, depending on the form of fibre. It will mainly be FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) which offers speeds up to 40Mb or FTTH/P (Fibre to the Home/Premises), the more expensive type with speeds up to 100Mb.

More than 90% of Londoners are now using advanced ADSL2+ copper connections; this offers broadband speeds of up to 20Mb. In a recent announcement, BT have said that they will have upgraded 114 exchanges across London ? to serve over 2 million homes and businesses ? to fibre broadband by spring 2011.

Thus, by the time of the Olympic Games, the City of London will be one of the best connected cities. The network through which they will be offering fibre broadband to their customers is called BT Infinity.
